Today, the FTC is confirming that it has an open non-public investigation into these practices,\u201d the agency said in a statement, after\u00a0declining to comment last week\u00a0when\u00a0<em>Bloomberg<\/em>\u00a0reported that an investigation has been opened.<\/p>\n<p id=\"XtzouF\">Specifically, the investigation seeks to find whether Facebook violated a consent decree \u2014 which requires the social network to obtain explicit permission from users to share their data with third parties \u2014 that it signed with the agency in 2011. If Facebook is found guilty, the company could be fined up to $40,000 per violation, reports\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2018\/03\/26\/ftc-confirms-facebook-data-breach-investigation.html\">CNBC<\/a>. For its part, Facebook said it would\u00a0comply with the FTC, noting that it would \u201cappreciate the opportunity to answer questions the FTC may have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"hdSLO2\">Today\u2019s announcement follows a series of backlash against Facebook since the Cambridge Analytica news came to light, with a\u00a0UK Parliamentary committee calling for CEO Mark Zuckerberg to testify, Facebook\u00a0stock tanking and erasing billions off its market value, and user trust in the company\u00a0continuing to decline. Zuckerberg has since apologized for the data mishandling,\u00a0both in media interviews\u00a0and in\u00a0full-page newspaper ads, adding that he would be open to testifying before Congress if it is the right thing for him to do.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Zuckerberg in our belief needs to step down from Facebook due to the invasion of privacy under his watch.\u00a0 He can no longer hide the facts that all
